Sound in Dreams: How Your Brain Processes Hearing While You Sleep

A few posts ago, we noted that smell is nearly absent from dreams: only 1–2% of dream reports include any olfactory experience. Sound is at the opposite end of the sensory spectrum. Between 70 and 90% of dreams reported in laboratory settings include sound — voices, music, ambient noise, the sounds of dream environments.
The auditory world of dreaming is rich, consistent, and neurologically interesting. Understanding how it works reveals something about the architecture of the dreaming brain — and explains why a car alarm outside your window can become a police siren in your dream.
The Auditory Cortex in Dreaming
The starting point is the neuroscience: the auditory cortex is reliably active during REM sleep.
Neuroimaging studies (fMRI and PET) consistently show activation in the temporal lobe's auditory processing regions during REM sleep that correlates with the presence of sound in dream reports. When dreamers are woken during periods of auditory cortex activity and asked what they were experiencing, they typically report dreams containing heard sounds — voices, music, noise.
This is different from merely dreaming about having heard something. The auditory cortex is generating a neural simulation of hearing — the same regions that process actual acoustic input from the world are processing internally generated "sound" during dreaming.
The contrast with smell is instructive. The olfactory system has a relatively direct path from receptors to the olfactory cortex, bypassing the thalamus. The auditory system routes through the thalamus — a relay station that is heavily suppressed during NREM sleep but remains more active during REM. This difference in thalamic routing may be part of why auditory dreaming is so much more prevalent than olfactory dreaming: the auditory pathway's thalamic relay remains accessible during REM in a way that is less available to olfaction.
Voices: The Most Common Dreamed Sound
The most common form of sound in dreams is the human voice.
Dream characters speak. Conversations occur. The dreamer hears (and often participates in) dialogue, argument, instruction, declaration — the full range of spoken interaction. Dreams in which no one speaks, and no ambient sound is present, represent a minority of reported dream experiences.
This prevalence of dreamed speech is consistent with the importance of language and social interaction in waking life. The continuity hypothesis of dreaming — that dream content reflects waking preoccupations — predicts that the most significant forms of waking auditory experience would be most prominent in dreaming. Human voices and language are among the most cognitively and emotionally significant things we hear.
The representation of speech in dreams also has a phenomenological dimension worth noting: some dreamers experience themselves as speaking aloud within the dream, with a sense of producing actual sound; others experience their communication as more thought-like, a form of silent intention rather than audible speech. Both forms are reported, and both seem to function communicatively within the dream narrative.
External Sounds Entering Dreams
The sleeping brain does not fully close its ears. A degree of environmental monitoring persists through sleep, maintained by the same evolutionary pressure that made it valuable to be able to wake when something genuinely threatening arrived in the night.
The threshold for waking varies across sleep stages and individuals. Sounds that exceed the threshold produce K-complexes (large, slow brainwave events in NREM sleep) or arousal; sounds that fall below it may be processed differently — incorporated into the ongoing dream narrative rather than interrupting it.
The incorporation is often creative. The sleeping brain interprets the incoming sound and assigns it a meaning within the dream world:
- A phone alarm becomes a fire alarm in the dream
- A car horn becomes a shout from a dream character
- A nearby conversation becomes the voices of people the dreamer knows
- A thunder clap becomes an explosion in a dream scenario
The integration is rapid and seamless. The dream narrative reshapes itself around the interpreted sound, and the dreamer may have no sense that anything external has occurred — only that the dream has acquired a new element.
This is part of the broader phenomenon of sensory stimuli during sleep being processed rather than ignored. The brain is never fully offline; it maintains selective attention to the environment even in the deepest non-REM stages, and during the lighter arousal of REM, external sounds have greater access to the dream construction process.
Music in Dreams
Music is among the more remarkable forms of auditory dreaming.
Research on musical dreaming finds that people with musical training or strong musical engagement dream about music significantly more than non-musicians: approximately 40–50% of musicians report frequent musical dreaming — hearing music in dreams, performing, improvising, or in some cases hearing wholly original musical material.
Non-musicians report musical dreaming less frequently, but many people describe the experience of waking with a melody in their head that clearly came from a dream rather than from a familiar piece of music they know.
Wholly original dreamed music is among the most intriguing reported phenomena in musical dreaming. Some dreamers describe hearing a complete melody, harmonic progression, or musical piece in a dream that has no waking-life source — it is new music, generated by the dreaming brain from its musical knowledge and experience. Whether these generated pieces are genuinely novel (never exactly heard before) or reconstructed from fragments of known music that feel novel in the dream state is not fully resolvable — but the experience of hearing original music in a dream is reported consistently enough to take seriously.
This is consistent with the hyperassociative, generative character of REM dreaming more generally. The same brain that combines people, places, and narratives from disparate waking experiences into novel dream scenarios can do the same with musical elements — combining melodic contours, rhythmic patterns, and harmonic structures into new musical material.
Multilingual Dreaming
For people who speak more than one language, the question of language in dreams is a revealing window into how dreaming processes identity, emotion, and memory.
Research on multilingual dreaming finds that dream language is not fixed — dreamers move between languages, and the language that appears in a given dream follows recognisable patterns:
Emotional valence and first language. The first language (L1) acquired tends to carry more direct emotional access — it is the language of early memory, of primary relationships, of unfiltered emotional processing. Dreams with high emotional significance often default to L1 even in highly proficient second-language users. Dreams in L2 (the second language) may feel more formal, more distanced, more like "work" language.
Recently used language. The most recently and intensively used language tends to be prominent in dreams during the period of use — language learners immersed in a new language often find it entering their dreams relatively quickly, a sign that the brain is processing the new linguistic material during sleep.
Character-specific language. Dream characters may speak the language the dreamer associates with them in waking life — a childhood friend speaks the language of childhood; a work colleague speaks the work language.
Code-switching within dreams — moving between languages mid-conversation, or different characters speaking different languages — is also reported and mirrors the reality of multilingual waking life.
Deaf Dreamers and the Absence of Sound
The other side of sound in dreams is its absence in those who have never heard.
As covered in the existing post on deaf dreaming, congenitally deaf individuals do not typically dream in sound — their dreams are organized around visual and spatial experience, and they may communicate in signed language within their dreams rather than through spoken voices. The auditory cortex in congenitally deaf individuals undergoes cross-modal plasticity, being recruited for visual and spatial processing — and this reorganisation is reflected in dream experience.
People who lost hearing later in life may continue to dream in sound for years or decades after the onset of deafness, with the period of acoustic dreaming gradually declining as the auditory representations fade. This distinction — congenitally deaf (no auditory dreaming) versus late-deafened (persistent auditory dreaming that fades over time) — is among the most direct evidence that dream sensory content reflects actual sensory experience and neural organisation rather than some independent dream faculty.
The prevalence of sound in most people's dreams is not a universal feature of dreaming itself — it is a feature of the dreaming brain that has organised itself around a lifetime of auditory experience.
